The Department of Transport (DoT) first published a Circular to Industry (CI) regarding the design and safety requirements for bull bars in 1995. The document was developed in conjunction with the Western Australian bull bar industry. Since then the document has been updated five times, most notably in 2005 when, following discussions between all jurisdictions, examples of non-compliant bull bars were added to provide some clarity.

The fundamental requirements have not changed, however the attached ‘Proposed updates, Vehicle Frontal Protection Systems - Construction Guidelines’ document has been developed to provide additional clarity for both industry and consumers. DoT is seeking the views of stakeholders such as yourself on this document via a survey. The questions focus primarily on the proposed updates.

The Motor Trade Association of WA (MTA WA) is seeking industry feedback and is forming a Committee to address these issues.
