A quintessentially British motoring icon has made a return to Western Australian shores, with a slight twist - care of the John Hughes Motor group.

The SAIC Motor Corporation have appointed the John Hughes Group exclusive rights to the 1924-established MG marque in Western Australia, signalling the return of the British icon, with a reengineered focus under its new parent company.

John Hughes MG Dealership

On the evening of the 18th of April, a launch event was attended by the MTA WA at Australia's first stand-alone MG dealership on Albany Highway in Victoria Park, with SAIC Executives, John Hughes Group staff and industry guests mixing with MG Motoring purists and enthusiasts to witness the next phase of the brand’s journey on Australian roads.

The launch in WA includes the MG3 Hatch, the MG6-Plus liftback-hatch, the ZS compact SUV and the GS medium-sized SUV. Whilst modern looking, competitively priced and offering 6 and 7 year Unlimited Kilometre warranties – some of the more subtle cues may be overlooked by the average motorist on the road.

For instance, the “London Eye” LED day time running lights on the ZS, which pay homage to one of London’s most visited attractions or the “3D Sound” audio system, which was developed by Yamaha to isolate sound to particular areas within the vehicle’s cabin. Technology and cabin comfort have been granted obvious attention upon initial inspection, although we weren’t able to test drive the vehicles, being a showroom based launch. The MG GS was the first Chinese-built vehicle to be rated a 5 Star Safety rating in Australia by ANCAP, which is likely to form a new era for imports from the region. The MG3 has yet to be tested and the MG6-Plus and ZS both received 4 star ANCAP ratings. The area of safety has been earmarked by SAIC as one of its key considerations for current and future development, which is reassuring, as an ‘across-the-board’ 5 Star ANCAP range will be critical to bolstering the brand’s integrity in Australia.

The Shanghai-based SAIC has joint-venture partnerships with Volkswagen, Skoda, General Motors and Iveco and are investing heavily in research and development into vehicle connectivity, safety and alternative fuel systems to integrate into their MG portfolio and have flagged their commitment to ongoing safety and technological development with their X-Motion and E-Motion concepts among other vehicle prototypes currently being tested. If heritage was the order of the day for previous MG iterations, youthfulness would appear to be the overarching motivation in the current generation design.

John Hughes’ MG Motor showroom itself has also been considered in its design, with various elements of historical significance to those familiar with MG heritage. The striking, vintage-era MG PA racer & immaculately restored S.A. Tickford Coupe on display not only caught the eyes of nearly every guest in attendance, but reinstated in their minds, the rich history of the brand and its significance in the place of people’s hearts. The various MG Motoring clubs in WA seemed to love every minute of it, even if the new range has taken a modern leap.

If the UK’s record breaking March sales of the MG brand are any indication, the public may well be quick to warm to the brand in WA, particularly in the medium SUV segment, which can often set buyers back $35k+. The MY17 MG GS is currently priced from $22,490 driveaway for the “Soul” edition, significantly undercutting segment competitors, with the MY17.5 GS “Soul” models starting from $27,989 driveaway.
